چکیده

10 Astaxanthin is the dominant carotenoid pigment found in the marine copepod, Tigriopus 11 californicus (Baker), giving these animals orange-red coloration. Like all metazoans, T. 12 californicus must convert carotene or hydroxy-carotenoids present in their algal diet to 13 astaxanthin. Other astaxanthin-pigmented crustaceans have been shown to use a precursor14 specific bioconversion pathway to astaxanthin. The aims of this study were to demonstrate that 15 T. californicus bioconverts dietary carotenoids to astaxanthin. Prior to the experiments copepods 16 were maintained on a carotenoid-free diet on which they lost all carotenoid coloration. Copepods 17 were then fed one of four dietary carotenoids (β-carotene, lutein, zeaxanthin, or canthaxathin) 18 that are precursors to specific astaxanthin bioconversion pathways. We found that copepods from 19 each precursor pigment group produced astaxanthin, and that the amount produced depended on 20 . Title: On the bioconversion of dietary carotenoids to astaxanthin and its distribution in the 1 marine copepod, Tigriopus californicus

10 Red carotenoid-based coloration is widely distributed across marine and terrestrial animals and 11 has taken a prominent role in studies of how phenotypic traits evolve in response to natural and 12 sexual selection. Key to these studies is an understanding of the physiological mechanisms that 13 give rise to red coloration, yet an ideal model system for such work has not been identified. Th...

Pigment transfer from phytoplankton to zooplankton with emphasis on astaxanthin production in the Baltic Sea food web

The carotenoid astaxanthin is a powerful antioxidant and a compound of vital importance for many marine organisms such as crustaceans and salmonids. Although astaxanthin deficiency may have serious consequences for ecosystem functioning, its origin and transfer in the food web have been little studied. Astaxanthin is produced by planktonic crustaceans, but these cannot synthesise carotenoid pig...

The study of synthetic and natural pigments on the colour of the Albino Oscar

In this study, we have investigated the effects of mix of Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) & Carrot) Daucus carota ( and red Bell pepper )Capsicum annuum( as a natural pigment source and astaxanthin as synthetic pigment sources on the skin colour of cichlid fish (Astronotus ocellatus sp., Agassiz, 1831), which are generally white with red patches in the dorsal skin. The fish were fed diets contain...

The adaptive significance of color polymorphism in two species of Diaptomus (Copepoda)l

In the Lower Grand Coulee, Washington, Diaptomus nevadensis in Soap Lake contains larger amounts of the carotenoid astaxanthin than in Lake Lenore. During winter, Diaptomus sicilis contains larger amounts of pigment in both lakes, but in summer individuals from Lake Lenore are much reduced in pigment while those from Soap Lake are unchanged. The amount of astaxanthin might be a reflection of th...

Dietary Carotenoids Regulate Astaxanthin Content of Copepods and Modulate Their Susceptibility to UV Light and Copper Toxicity

High irradiation and the presence of xenobiotics favor the formation of reactive oxygen species in marine environments. Organisms have developed antioxidant defenses, including the accumulation of carotenoids that must be obtained from the diet. Astaxanthin is the main carotenoid in marine crustaceans where, among other functions, it scavenges free radicals thus protecting cell compounds agains...
